Increased interest for cloud computing solutions coupled with budgetary pressures has spawned the demand for IT Capacity Managers. IT professionals in this role work to determine if their organization has the necessary amount of resources to effectively meet company needs. To do so, they must evaluate the current infrastructure to determine if the materials are being used efficiently. Typically reporting to the CIO, Capacity Managers are responsible for suggesting changes that should to be made including recommending additional equipment or solutions. A fairly new position, these IT pros are also expected to project future technology needs of the company as well and estimate whether the company has sufficient computing capacity to fulfill company goals.
To succeed in this IT engineering job, tech professionals should be detail oriented and have a strong background in infrastructure, enterprise applications, database solutions, storage, networks and servers. The solid skills in budgeting, forecasting, modeling and statistical analysis are also a must with regard to IT skill assessment. In addition, Capacity Managers should have a clear understanding of overall business processes and be adept at communicating technical information to non-techie types since they will have to explain how their recommendations will help the company meet its objectives.
